Hello, and welcome to the “about me” page of my blog. As you can probably guess, my name is Darlene Ulmet. I am currently residing in the countryside of eastern North Carolina where I am rather impatiently awaiting with great anticipation for what I hope to be the final relocation of my lifetime back to Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
I have five children (Chris – age 28, Daniel – age 26, Skyler aka Laura – age 23, John – age 21 and Robert -age 21 also, yes twins!). Their ages are as of March 2014 and I am making this age disclaimer now as I have no intention of constantly updating our ages on this page as our birthdays occur throughout the year. For the record, my age is 54 as of the original date of this post. (March 2014)
Demographically, I am a single Caucasian female. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science (the “Computer Science” degree combined with accounting and finance way back when) and I also hold a minor in English Literature. For most of my life, I have been torn between the two worlds of computing and writing. I always figured that computing and finance paid the bills so that was my primary profession for most of my adult life. Recently, a number of individuals have encouraged me to pursue writing as a late life endeavor/profession and I am actively engaged in several writing projects. But for now, I still need to primarily focus on the left brain career path that has served me well thus far in life.
Midlife, I developed several rare autoimmune diseases which really put a major monkey wrench in my previously developed life goal and career plans. It was with great sadness that I voluntarily resigned from my previous position as a Senior Financial Analyst with Baylor Healthcare in Dallas, Texas in order to focus on my health issues. Since that time, my autoimmune diseases have been treated and are now under control but it is still not possible for me to return to the traditional workforce with a full time “on location” job requirement. At present time, I am fervently seeking a professional remote telecommuting position with full benefits package wherein I can remain until my age of retirement. I still have a lot of good years left to be of valuable service to an organization that offers a telecommuting option.
I am a Christian and I was brought up in the Church of Christ on the East Cost where I resided until I was in my early forties. My East Coast Church of Christ (in the years prior to 2000) had both a piano and an organ so I was thoroughly stunned when I moved to Texas and discovered that the vast majority of Church of Christ churches are non-instrumental. I have very fond memories of both my East Coast and Texas church families and I look forward to finding a new church home as soon as I re-settle into coastal living on the Outer Banks. Until that time, there is a wealth of online sermons and other Christian resources that are serving my spiritual needs.
I enjoy wine (red and white) as well as wine-making, contemporary Christian/classical/ country/70’s and 80’s rock/reggae/jazz and blues/Broadway music, geocaching, literature/reading/writing/editing, motivational speaking, photography, and Texas Holdem Poker Tournaments. One of my favorite authors is George Eliot. There is a Wikipedia link to the George Eliot biography on the main page of my site. I honestly believe that “It is never too late to become what you might have been” and I am constantly fascinated by the stories of late bloomers such as Grandma Moses, Julia Child, Mahatma Gandhi, Ray Krok, and Laura Ingalls Wilder. I believe in the power of new beginnings, turning over a new leaf, and starting over. I may not be living out the life that I had planed but I am certainly living out the life that God has planned for me.
I hope you will enjoy this site as much as I have enjoyed creating it! Thank you for visiting and God Bless!
When “cartooned”, I look somewhat like this:
